National gardening day
Some people love gardening and some people hate it. I love gardening but the downside is it takes time to do things and costs money. The good thing is that it can be relaxing, great to be outside in the fresh air. With the cost of living at the moment people are looking for allotments to grow their own fruit and vegetables which is great and satisfying when you have sewn the seeds and can see them grow, I love it. Seeds can be cheaper if you shop around or I buy at the end of the season when they are selling off the seeds and last year got some for fifty pence a packet. I bought quite a lot of packets of varied seeds. I start sowing my seeds in April inside but keep an eye on them as they need watering regularly as they can dry up. As soon as the frosts have gone you can plant them out or put them out regularly to build up resistance. You can also take cuttings from your plants. I have found that heathers are hit-and-miss to take cuttings off, sometimes they sprout and other times they don’t. Strawberry plants are best to take cuttings off in the late summer or early autumn. Plant the runners in a pot and leave them for a week then cut them off from the main plant. They will come again next year.
Another great tip is to paint your concrete pots or strawberry planters with masonry paint, they come up like new. I have done it a few times and it looks great. See before and after below, so pleased with how they came out. Have a go yourself, you will be amazed how good they look
Back to cakes, I have been asked for a few gardening cakes so I thought I would show you one of them
